Aider uses LiteLLM internally; OpenAI-compatible endpoints simply require the OPENAI_API_BASE setting and a model name starting with openai/.

Architect mode with two models

aider --architect \
  --model openai/claude-opus-4-6 \
  --editor-model openai/claude-sonnet-4-6

The architect model designs changes, and the editor model writes diffs. Both are charged to the same balance and recorded separately in the Request Log.

Troubleshooting

AuthenticationError — OPENAI_API_KEY is not exported or .env cannot be read (Aider read the .env file from the working directory or the Git root directory).
NotFoundError model — missing the openai/ prefix or incorrect slug.
Warning: unknown context window — no .aider.model.metadata.json file yet; see step 4.
Truncated response — increase max_output_tokens in the metadata or select a model with a different limit greater output.
