Codex CLI only supports the OpenAI Responses protocol. Hostlinku provides it at POST /v1/responses — stateless, with support for reasoning.encrypted_content, function calling, and streaming, exactly as Codex expects. The configuration requires only one custom provider.

Troubleshooting

  • 401 — The variable in env_key has not been exported in the shell where codex is running.
  • The model responds, “Cannot run the shell,” and then generates output — that model is not Responses are native, so the Codex tool is removed before reaching the model. Select a model from the list of Codex-ready models above; do not use gpt-5-6-terra for Codex.
  • 400 previous_response_id not supported — appears only if a plugin or script forces it stored responses mode. Make sure store is not set to true.
  • Model not found / 404 — incorrect slug; /v1/models displays a valid list for Your key.
  • The old version of the Codex requires wire_api = "chat"" — Hostlinku also supports this /v1/chat/completions; however, the Codex reasoning feature works best with responses.
